- Montego Bay, Jamaica -

Jamaica will turn into a foot-tapping dance floor with the popular Reggae Sumfest set to take place from 12 July to 18 July this year. Jamaica’s second largest city, Montego Bay will play the perfect host to this globally renowned festival. Reggae Sumfest like every year will feature A-Lister performances witnessed by thousands of music lovers from around the world.

Reggae Sumfest is often dubbed as ‘the greatest reggae show on earth’. The influential icon Bob Marley developed the genre reggae in his home country, Jamaica. Marley died at the age of 36 doing what he loved, after devoting much of his life to music.

First staged in 1993, Reggae Sumfest quickly became popular not only in Jamaica but throughout the world. The festival has successfully incorporated international artists to the line up such as Usher, Chris Brown, Kanye West, Rihanna, etc in past few years. This year the festival kicks off with a Beachfest on 12th July at the Aquasol Theme Park with some renowned deejays and performers. The festival will be followed by other entertainment nights such as DanceHall Explosion, Show Time, etc. This years’s line up includes top talents and international performers.

Reggae Sumfest is regarded as a premier reggae music event and is one of the best times to visit the island country. The festival is not only a paradise for music lovers but also for food connoisseurs to savour the most mouth-watering culinary delights.

Known fondly as MoBay, Montego Bay is graced with a modern international airport (Sangster International Airport) giving an access to vacationers to the music city. The waterfront is lined with picture-perfect sandy beaches, luxury hotels and elegant resorts. Montego Bay is home to the Hip Strip – a full mile of restaurants, entertainment, shopping, fun and excitement. Montego Bay is a thriving city abuzz with activities for every budget and preference.

Where else to be but in Jamaica, as this is the time for Reggae Sumfest, enjoying the reputation of presenting top class global artists. The event is committed to showcasing indigenous reggae talents and budding talents, while keeping the spirit of Promoting Music, the Universal Force alive.

-Caribbean’s Preserved Georgian town-

Jamaica’s rich history and culture are as appealing as its prominent attractions of white sandy beaches and vibrant nightlife. Across the island, visitors will find various monuments and relics that speak to an era of both hardship and triumph. In the 1800’s heyday of King Sugar, the Parish of Trelawny, Jamaica boasted almost one hundred sugar plantations. For the architecture or heritage buff, the Parish and in particular its capital, the coastal town of Falmouth is a virtual goldmine.

Falmouth is considered one of the Caribbean’s best-preserved towns from the Georgian era. Its historic district is a National Heritage site with many late 18th-century and early 19th-century buildings still standing. Points of interest in this historic town include everything from stunning buildings to enchanting rivers, landscapes and natural phenomena.

Closer to the coast you’ll find The Armoury – Fort Balcarres – a 15-square-foot structure with walls four to five feet thick. The Cannon at Fort Balcarres is one of the original two that remain of the 1811 fort built to defend the harbor. Just off the main road you’ll find St. Peter’s Anglican Church – the first church in Trelawny, built in 1796. Tharp House – built in 1785, this was one of three houses owned by John Tharp, the largest land owner in Trelawny during the sugar era.

Other interesting sites include The Old Baptist Manse – originally built as a Masonic temple, this later became the residence of the “Great Emancipator” William Knibb. The Court House – built between 1815 and 1817, this served as host to many town gatherings and now houses the Parish Council offices. The Falmouth Heritage Walking Tour is a great way to see these monuments.

There are also many other sites worth visiting in Falmouth. Located just minutes outside of Falmouth, sitting back from the main road, the Good Hope Great House was built around 1755 and consists of one thousand acres, bordering the Martha Brae river travel to the ruins where the water wheel and kiln still stands today; take a short stroll near the Martha Brae river and ride in the buggies once used by the planters, walk through the ruins of buildings that were once the jewel of the Caribbean. The equally stunning Greenwood Great House is located just west of Falmouth in the hills overlooking the sea, this house was built by the Barrett family between 1780 and 1800.

Literally glowing in the dark under the moonlit sky, the Luminous Lagoon at Glistening Waters is also well worth a visit. Located just east of Falmouth, this is one of Jamaica’s most spectacular natural wonders. Enveloped by mangroves, the lagoon is home to microscopic organisms that emit a phosphorescent light when the water is agitated. As the water is disturbed, you’ll see an iridescent light illuminating the waters below. The phosphorescence is so thick that moving fish in the water are said to resemble shooting stars.

The town of Falmouth contains large collection of Georgian style buildings in the country. The number aside, some of the finest representations of buildings from the period are to be found here, and each of these structures tells a unique tale of different people’s lifestyles and of the economic and social significance of the town better than any written record could represent.

Visit Falmouth in Jamaica for a truly absorbing historical experience. Take a journey back in time to relive the moments and memories of a rich, bygone era.

Jamaica is one of the most sought-after destinations in the Caribbean and the world. Part of its charm is the abundance of access to sparkling shores and tranquil turquoise waters. Jamaica is filled with seductive coves, cays and bays. Here is a list of 5 of the most enchanting ones which is a must-visit in island country.

Lime Cay
The largest of the many small cays off the coast of Port Royal, Lime Cay is a part of Jamaica uninhabitable by humans because it is occasionally submerged when the tide comes in. A shuttle or boat rental for the day can be arranged to travel to Lime Cay, but for the intrepid visitors, a small fee will convince a fisherman in the town of Port Royal to give you a ride to the island. About half of the area is wooded, the rest is sand and coral. It has no infrastructure except for a small open building used for the preparation and selling of food. Seclusion and privacy are part of the draw to Jamaica’s beaches, and Lime Cay gives a taste of off the beaten path travel without taking you too far away from the city.

Frenchman’s Cove

Port Antonio, on Jamaica’s eastern coast, is snugly located between the Blue Mountains and the Caribbean Sea. The area is considered relatively virgin territory and Frenchman’s Cove is a perfectly secluded spot that will make you fall in love with the water instantly. One of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, let alone Jamaica, this white-sanded shore is set against a magnificent backdrop of exotic tropical gardens and crystal-clear mountain streams. Frenchman’s Cove is tucked between two rocky bluffs and consists of a lagoon which meanders around a bar of sand from one direction while the sea barrels from the other, pinched between two tiny headlands that are overhung with greenery – giving the beach a luminous green light. The entrance is through lush gardens, which then open up into a gorgeous little secluded beach cove. There’s also a jerk hut on the beach with drinks and food.

Treasure Beach
Set against a background of lush greenery, Treasure Beach is a six-mile stretch of coral-coloured and sometimes black sands, private coves and rocky shores. For travellers who want to discover the South Coast’s vibrant local culture and people and are in search of untrodden beaches, a visit to one of Treasure Beach’s main bays – Billy’s, Calabash, Fort Charles (also known as Starve Gut) Great and Frenchman’s – is a must. Uniquely Jamaican dishes, such as curried goat, jerked meat and pumpkin soup are also available at roadside stands at beach. All lovely, laid-back stretches are well-suited for swimming, snorkeling, biking, hiking, surfing, and of course, the mellow vibes of kicking back in the sun with a cold one in hand.

Dolphin Cove
Dolphin Cove is Jamaica’s premier marine attraction. It has all the makings of a great family adventure; offering the excitement of interacting with not only bottlenose dolphins, but stingrays, snakes, iguanas and a host of colourful tropical birds as well. The magnificent Ocho Rios property has a natural cove which is surrounded by 5 acres of lush tropical rain forest. Visitors have the opportunity to interact and swim with dolphins, enjoying the thrill and love of these amazing lovable animals. Visitors can also swim with, hold, feed and learn about the evolutionary secrets of the Caribbean sharks.

Bloody Bay
Bloody Bay is one of Negril’s most picturesque beaches. There is some debate about how the beach claimed its name. Some argue it was the site of a vicious pirate battle, but most believe hunters used to massacre whales there, turning the sea blood-red. Shrouded by this seemingly dark past, Bloody Bay still mystifies and intrigues beachgoers with its beauty. Once a trade secret, this secluded stretch is lined today with a string of all-inclusive properties, including Riu Hotels, Couples Negril and Sunset at the Palms.

Experience truly captivating cays, bays and coves in Jamaica. Come and see the attractions which are famous for their stunning natural beauty and an alluring cultural appeal wooing travelers all over the world for decades.

Legendary land of compelling history

Jamaica has a dynamic history with a rich, strong and vibrant background. From a mixture of ethnicities that have landed on the island country over centuries, Jamaica has many fascinating stories to tell. It is the heritage heartland to soak in the history of the Carribbean. With a combination of old places and its interesting stories dating back to hundreds of years, Jamaica is the perfect place to celebrate history.

Port Royal
Once known as the largest town in the English colonies, Port Royal is a captivating historical site of Jamaica. Many well-known pirates and privateers have passed through the port including Captain Henry Morgan. An earthquake hit Port Royal in June 1692 ruining the colony completely. The tremours of the earthquake perished two-third of the city and killed thousands. People talk about this incident as a curse, since the port was a major haven for pirates and buccaneers. Famously known as the wickedest city, tourists get a first-hand experience of the remains and the artifacts. Port Royal is now a small fishing village unlike its past.

Rose Hall Great House
Located approx 15km east of Montego Bay, Rose Hall Great House is one of the most intriguing historical structures in Jamaica. George Ash built it in 1770 for John Palmer and his wife Rosa. According to local legend the Great House is to this day haunted by the malicious spirit of Annie Palmer, “The White Witch”, the tempestuous widow of John Palmer’s grandnephew John Rose Palmer, who eventually came to own the estate. This stunningly built mansion is in cut-stone on the first two levels and stucco on the third and uppermost level. The building also features cut-stone symmetrical grand staircase, sash windows, keystones, etc making it perfect backdrop for couples who dream of a fantasy wedding set back in history.

Accompong Maroon Village
Accompong is a historical village of Jamaica where the runaway slaves settled to be safe from the Spanish and the British rulers, named after Maroon leader Accompong. Located in St. Elizabeth Parish, about 40 miles south of Montego Bay, the village was consolidated in 1739 by a treaty. It is a historic home to Leeward Maroon. The inhabitants of Accompong share practices and a culture similar to their African culture originating 200–300 years ago and is an interesting place to visit when in Jamaica.

Falmouth
Falmouth is Jamaica’s best-preserved Georgian town and a must visit when in the island country. With a rich heritage and history, Falmouth gives its visitors to enjoy 19th-century Georgian architecture as well as river bamboo raft rides, arts and crafts shopping, flavorful local fare and horse-and-buggy rides. Falmouth is situated about 18 miles east of Montego Bay and was once a royal town and commerce centre during the sugarcane boom of the 1700s. Falmouth with an interesting history and various attractions is a perfect place to spend some quality time on vacations.

Good Hope Great House
Good Hope Great House is a beautiful mansion consisting one-thousand acres of land. The estate borders the Martha Brae river. This old cut-stone building has high roof beam ceilings, with pinewood and wild orange floors, water wheel and kiln that still stand today. The Good Hope Estate was made through a land grant given to Colonel Thomas William and now is a home to 13-bedroom accomodation with various attractions nearby. Chukka Caribbean Adventures tours of the Good Hope Great House is one of the exciting activities to do in Jamaica.

Favourite Getaway Spot for Vacations and Retreats

Portland is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in Jamaica. With its stunning blue waters, romantic coves, remote white sand beaches, breathtaking panoramic views and some of the best food on the island, Portland has long been a favourite getaway spot for everyone from celebrities to couples on their honeymoon and families on vacation. Portland with its rustic charm, waterfalls and river rafting is perfect for any nature lover.

Portland’s bigger beaches – Frenchman’s Cove, Winnifred Beach – are well-explored. But tracking down the off-the-beaten-path beaches, can be gratifying, providing you with serenity and exposure to the authentic Jamaica and its rustic charms. Visitors can watch the sunrise over Long Bay Beach, something so amazing; it’s worth getting up at 5:30 am. Turtle Beach, named for its view of a turtle shell shaped rock that sits just offshore is visually stunning. Portland is an ideal destination for anyone looking to fulfill their dream of getting married on the beach.

Well renowned as “The Jerk Capital of Jamaica” Boston Bay in Portland is not only a tantalizing treat for the taste buds, it also appeals to sun worshipers and vacationers seeking to venture into the realm of water sports. The golden sands and rough waters will tempt you to grab a surfboard and ride the waves, take a lesson in wind surfing, or venture further out to some good snorkeling sites. As the birthplace of Jerk food, Boston Bay is arguably the best place to sample authentic cuisines in Jamaica.

The very famous Blue Mountains are also located in Portland as is the world famous Blue Lagoon, which is believed to be the crater of an extinct volcano. The lagoon is an almost landlocked cove with approximately 180 feet of absolutely invigorating water. Swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving in the Blue Lagoon are absolute must do’s, not to mention kayaking to Monkey Island, just a stones throw away.

Somerset Falls are an ideal getaway for a memorable picnic in paradise. This beautiful secluded waterfall is hidden in the rainforest. The waterfall is refreshing where water cascades from above to form nature’s perfect jacuzzi. River Rafting on the Rio Grande River is also a famous activity for visitors.

Doctor’s Cave Beach: World famous white sands and crystal clear waters fed by a mineral spring combine at the beautiful Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay. The translucent water is known for its mineral content and its golden sands and turquoise water provide the perfect place to enjoy the tranquil warmth of the Caribbean Sea. Visitors can even watch brightly colored tropical fish swimming close to the surface. Visitors who crave activity and action will especially enjoy the offerings of this ideally located spot. Doctor’s Cave is not too far off the beaten path in Jamaica and offers a chance for tourists to meet new people and enjoy a lively beach ambience. The neighborhood at Doctor’s Cave features a wide variety of dining options, ranging from traditional Jamaican cuisine to international fare to pub-style steak dinners.

Margaritaville Caribbean Bar and Grill: Famous for theme parties, fantastic food and serving tropical margaritas beachside, Margaritaville is one of the most popular party spots in the island. The Margaritaville located on Montego Bay’s Hip Strip is arguably the most popular of Jamaica. Locals and tourists alike flock to this location for two-tier open-air bars, two giant water trampolines connected by a log cross or the floating Margaritaville deck anchored offshore and a spectacular 120ft water-slide that winds right through the bar and into the warm blue Caribbean Sea below. There’s also a Jacuzzi, and a night-time disco. Enjoy their world-famous “Cheeseburger in Paradise”, tropical margaritas and exclusive shopping, sunbathing on the seaside pier or simply taking in the amazing view.

Rose Hall Great House: Located approx 15km east of Montego Bay, Rose Hall Great House is one of the most intriguing historical structures in Jamaica. George Ash built it in 1770 for John Palmer and his wife Rosa. According to local legend the Great House is to this day haunted by the malicious spirit of Annie Palmer, ‘The White Witch’, the tempestuous widow of John Palmer’s grandnephew John Rose Palmer, who eventually came to own the estate. This stunningly built mansion is in cut-stone on the first two levels and stucco on the third and uppermost level. The building also features cut-stone symmetrical grand staircase, sash windows, keystones, etc making it perfect backdrop for couples who dream of a fantasy wedding set back in history.

Chukka Caribbean Adventure’s Canopy Tour: The Canopy tour is not only adventurous but also takes you back to nature. The journey through nature will be via a series of decks and platforms, connected by traverses, mounted in the trees of the rainforest. Flying through the Caribbean Forests filled with incredible indigenous foliage allows one to experience nature at its best. This amazing experience of gliding silently through a tunnel of trees is the closest guests will ever feel like to be a jungle bird and can be found nowhere else.

Cinnamon Hill Golf Course: The sporty Cinnamon Hill Golf Course offers 18 holes of remarkable play. The expert caddies at the club, aside from helping with the shot can also give a little history as you pass through the golf course which is situated on what used to be a large sugar plantation. Considered one of the most user-friendly courses in Jamaica, every stroke at Cinnamon Hill is a beautiful one.

Cockpit Country: Often regarded as Jamaica’s most inhospitable region, the Cockpit Country is a hilly and dense area with limestone denudations traversing three parishes and covering over 500 square miles. The so-called “cockpits” are caused because limestone, the predominant soil in the area, does not retain water. Rainwater therefore, percolates downward through cracks and fissures, creating in time a landscape of pits and valleys. Below the surface of the Cockpit Country are hundreds of rivers, streams and caves, providing some of the best spelunking opportunities in the Caribbean. The Cockpit Country is still home to one of the most important Maroon communities in the island, the town of Accompong in the parish of St Elizabeth. The Cockpit Country has the highest diversity of plants and animals anywhere on the island.

Blue Beat Jazz Lounge: Martinis and jazz music are the order of the day at Blue Beat located right next door to Margaritaville on Montego Bay’s “Hip Strip”. The only bar of its type in Jamaica, Blue Beat serves up live jazz and blues music in a cosy setting with atmospheric lighting and cool blue decor to help set the tone. A decidedly more upscale place, elegant, with comfortable couches and lounge chairs to the side and a small, crowded patio out back overlooking the harbor. The outside lounge area is the best place to be on a typically hot, humid Jamaican night, a patio with couches and chairs just a handrail away from the dark ocean below.

Energetic, stunning and exciting, Montego Bay on Jamaica’s north coast embodies a spirit that invites us all to come out and play. A definite favorite among travelers in search of a good time, the second city is a great place to have your fill of relaxation and revelry. Treat yourself to something special with selections from Mobay’s extensive variety of hotels, attractions and nightclubs. There are options for every taste and budget in Jamaica’s “complete resort”.
