Best February Events in NYC

This February, NYC plays host to returning annual events like the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the new season of Amateur Night at the Apollo and various Lunar New Year celebrations. An exhibition of Raymond Pettibon’s punk art, a Jake Gyllenhaal–led revival of Sunday in the Park with George and plenty of fashion and sporting events also highlight the year’s shortest month. For details on these happenings and many more, read on.

Hundreds of thousands of industry insiders will descend upon the City for eight days of shows and presentations by some of the world’s most sought-after designers.  Paris Refashioned, 1957–1968 – Feb 10 – Apr 15

The decade between 1957 and 1968 proved to be one of the most revolutionary in fashion. And it all happened in Paris, naturally. The Museum at FIT explores this period’s shift in emphasis from haute couture to ready-to-wear fashions, thanks in part to the likes of Yves Saint Laurent—who became head of Christian Dior in 1957—Pierre Cardin and André Courrèges. These couture masters created more youthful, relaxed looks for everyday wear, which changed not only how people dressed but also how the haute couture industry operated. Westminster Dog Show- Feb 13 – Feb 14

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is a favorite of dog lovers worldwide, showcasing some of the most beloved (and rarest) breeds in the world. Breed judging and benching will be at Piers 92/94, while junior showmanship finals and group and best-in-show judging will take place evenings at Madison Square Garden. Roughly 3,000 dogs take part in the various competitions; last year’s best in show was a German shorthaired pointer named CJ.

Filthy Gorgeous Burlesque Valentines Spectacular- Feb 14

Put a little va-va-voom into your Valentine’s Day with this flirty burlesque variety show at the Highline Ballroom. Miss Astrid hosts this annual night of dance, music and staged debauchery, which features live music by Storm Marrero and performances by Poison Ivory, Pearls Daily and Devonaire. Tickets start at $30; there’s a $10 food/drink minimum too.

Sunday in the Park with George – Feb 11 – Apr 23

After an immensely successful three-day run at New York City Center in October 2016, Sunday in the Park with George is making the move to Broadway, taking up residency in the newly reopened Hudson Theatre for 10 weeks only. Jake Gyllenhaal reprises his role as French painter Georges Seurat in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize–winning musical. Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford (You Can’t Take It with You) will also star after her acclaimed performance in the City Center run.

Amateur Night at the Apollo Opening Night – Feb 22

The world-famous Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater returns in February for a new season of performances from singers, dancers, comedians and spoken-word artists. Many artists get their big break after taking the stage at Amateur Night (which takes place every Wednesday), as long as they’re not booed off stage by the audience. Participants also vie for a spot in the “Top Dog” competition hosted at the Apollo at the end of each season.
