Will the new tourism minister be able to make India more tourist friendly country?
In the big reshuffle of his Council of Ministers, PM Narendra Modi has appointed many new ministers, changed the portfolios of many ministers and some of the ministers have been promoted to cabinet rank. A retired 1979-batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre and a member of the BJP’s National Executive, Alphons Kannanthanam appointed the new Minister of State (Independent charge) for Tourism, replacing Dr. Mahesh Sharma. Kannanthanam, who belongs to Kerala, came into the limelight in the 1990s for his encroachment-clearing drive. He was then the commissioner of the Delhi Development Authority. It is after a long period of time when a bureaucrat has been made a minister of tourism. Before that, it was Jagmohan under the administration of Atal Bihari Vajpayee who launched the famous Incredible India.
And, it is the third time when the tourism minister has been changed under the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is quite questionable for Modi government that there the tourist ministers has been changed thrice (Shripad Yasso Naik, Mahesh Sharma and now, Alphons Kannanthanam). Earlier, Kannanthanam has been also appointed as the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology. So, let’s see will these rapid changes affect Modi’s government or upcoming elections. Moreover, will Kannanthanam the new minister (bureaucrat) make any new change or uplift the tourism in India and making it a tourist friendly country.
