India experience high rise in tourists with e-tourist visas
India experience high tourist influx from UK and US for largest number of successful applicants
The number of visitors entering India on the new e-tourist visas jumped sharply in March 2016.
As per the latest data from the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, a total of 115,677 e-visas were issued last month, compared to 25,851 in March 2015. This growth rate of almost 350% has been driven by the expansion of the e-visa system, which is now available for the citizens of 150 countries. This time last year, only 43 countries were included in the system.
The UK (27.7%) accounted for the largest percentage of successful e-visa applicants, followed by the US (13.4%), Russia (7.0%), France (6.6%), Germany (5.2%) and China (4.5%). And 46.8% of the e-visas were issued at Delhi Airport, ahead of Mumbai Airport (18.8%), Goa Airport (11.1%), Chennai Airport (5.6%) and Bengaluru Airport (5.0%).
The e-tourist visa system launched in November 2014 and has been gradually expanded, reaching 150 countries in February 2016.
