Northern Railway launches heritage steam train
After 25 years of the Indian Railways phasing out the steam engines, the Northern Railway (NR) relaunched the heritage steam train between Garhi Harsaru and Farukhnagar section at a fare of Rs 10 to promote tourism, said Ashwani Lohani, chairman of the Railway Board.
NR started the service considering that the tourists and steam enthusiasts from all over the world will visit these places for a ride on steam engine hauled train, increasing tourism-related activities in the region.
Presently, the train is being hauled by “WP7200AZAD”, a broad gauge 1947, “M/s Baldwin Locomotive Works USA” make. It was brought to India in 1947 and hence named “AZAD”, Lohani said adding that the locomotive had been restored to its pristine beauty and mechanical engineering perfections. Its revival was carried out at NR’s Heritage Steam Shed, Rewari, stated Arun Arora, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer.
