India’s first bullet train to start in 2023

India’s first high-speed railway is expected to be operational by 2023, Japan’s Prime Minister has said.

In a joint press conference in Tokyo with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, Shinzo Abe confirmed that construction work on the Japanese-backed bullet train project will commence in 2018, with operations expected to start five years later. India’s first high-speed rail line will stretch approximately 530km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

At the same event, Modi said he is “focused on making strong progress on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project. Our engagement and agreement on cooperation in the financial sector will help us in accessing greater resources for infrastructure development.”

After the meeting, Modi travelled by Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kobe. Japan’s bullet trains can travel at speeds in excess of 300kph.
