By Amrita Gupta

India’s hospitality landscape has undergone a quiet shift in the last few years. The perception that international arrivals determine the success or credibility of a destination has slowly begun to fade. As disposable incomes rise and aspirations evolve, domestic travel is shaping into a powerful engine of growth. For a market often compared with Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and other APAC peers, the decisive advantage today lies not in competing for the same foreign traveller pool, but in building on a far deeper and more reliable base of Indian tourists.

India Travels Inward, Not Outward

One of the most overlooked strengths of Indian hospitality is the sheer size and consistency of domestic tourism. While inbound travel is desirable from a branding lens, domestic tourism is the country’s economic anchor. According to government estimates, India recorded close to 1.73 billion domestic tourist visits in 2022, a number experts believe will continue to rise as connectivity improves and leisure preferences widen. Even if a portion of these movements converts into organised stays, the backbone of India’s hospitality growth becomes clear.

In contrast, APAC markets remain far more dependent on international arrivals. Thailand, for example, receives a substantial share of its tourism revenues from foreign travellers. That structure makes such markets more vulnerable to global shocks, currency swings and geopolitical surprises. India’s internal circulation of tourism demand offers an insulation that many of these destinations cannot replicate naturally. It may look less glamorous on a chart, but the stability is unmatched.

The interesting part is how this shift is starting to express itself. Travel decisions are now less seasonal, less occasion-driven. Workations, long weekends, wellness retreats and cultural getaways are creating demand throughout the year. The middle class is increasingly comfortable spending on stay experiences that are not driven purely by necessity but by aspiration.

Beyond Metros: Momentum in Tier II and Leisure Belts

While traditional tourist hubs like Jaipur, Goa, Udaipur and Kochi remain popular, the next wave of momentum will come from India’s Tier II belts and specialised leisure zones. Cities and towns that once lacked branded hospitality offerings are now seeing rapid conversion. Better roads, regional airports and digital discovery platforms have pulled new travellers into these circuits.
This is the space where India’s hospitality sector finds a genuine competitive edge over APAC. The country is building not just coastal or capital-centric travel patterns, but diversified regional tourism. Many domestic destinations are no longer dependent on a narrow theme or season. A single state can drive wildlife, heritage, pilgrimage and wellness tourism simultaneously, creating depth most APAC markets cannot match.
Then there is consumer behaviour. Indians tend to travel in groups, extended families or multi-generational clusters. One trip supports multiple room nights, food services, retail spending and activities. That ripple effect creates a larger revenue base per booking, often far higher than a single or couple traveller profile common in other Asian markets.

Hospitality Is Not Just About Hotels Anymore

The meaning of hospitality itself is expanding. Travellers expect spaces that blur relaxation, work, recreation and cultural immersion. Increasingly, hotels are no longer viewed as neutral shelters, but as social ecosystems. Wellness centres, local food offerings, curated art, community engagement activities and region-specific experiences are becoming part of the value proposition.
There is also a sustainability angle to this shift, though it shows up in small, everyday ways rather than grand statements. When people travel within India or within their own region, it cuts down on long flights and imported supplies, and that changes the footprint of the industry. The money they spend usually stays close to where it is earned.
One good example to illustrate this is Jaipur. A good tourist season in this city supports more than hotels. Farmers supplying vegetables, taxi drivers, guides, craft sellers, and even local sweet shops feel the difference. Many of these businesses depend mainly on Indian visitors, not international arrivals. It is a circle that feels informal but powerful. Money moves from visitor to neighbourhood, sometimes through small interactions that never feature in tourism reports. Tourism, in that sense, becomes something closer to local value creation than just heads in beds.

The Economic Edge

A stronger domestic base gives India pricing stability and long-term forecasting ability. APAC economies that lean on foreign arrivals often see sharp revenue swings when flight routes change or outbound markets cool. India’s internal tourism demand cushions hotels, resorts and alternative stay formats against such unpredictability. That stability encourages investment in hospitality infrastructure, which then feeds into regional employment, micro-business creation and skills development.

There is also a sustainability layer hidden within this shift. Domestic tourism reduces carbon footprints associated with long-haul travel and supports local supply chains. The impact flows into agriculture, transport, crafts and regional cuisine. Hospitality becomes a form of local economic regeneration rather than just demand fulfilment.
India’s tourism story will continue to evolve. International arrivals will rise, and they will remain important, but domestic travel will shape the country’s long-term hospitality identity. It is the quiet, constant force behind room growth, destination creation and occupancy resilience. The APAC comparison may flatter or distract, depending on the year, but India’s strength lies in a model that does not need to mirror others.

Some advantages are built slowly and silently. Domestic tourism happens to be one of them.

In his inaugural address on ‘Values on Spiritual Tourism’, Brahmaviharidas Swami said, “Tourism plays an important role in giving people a change of place and environment. But while places change, people don’t change. We should ask ourselves whether we can create joy even after removing all the instruments of entertainment.” He went on to discuss how Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar has defied traditional industrial practices, with over 80,000 volunteers coming together to construct a 600-acre complex through selfless efforts. He also highlighted how the Nagar has erased the border between temporary and permanent, and how the goal of the tourism industry should be to create permanent, positive experiences for people and enhance the quality of their lives. He further emphasized that people’s lives are transformed when they are served beyond their expectations and that it’s important to love your work and make people happy.

The Tourism Conclave in Gujarat kicked off with a welcome address by Manish Sharma, Founding Chairman and Managing Director of Akshar Travels, who highlighted the growth of tourism in the state since 2003, from 1% to 16%. The event, held at the spiritual venue of Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, was the first of its kind.

Thereafter, Honourable Hareet Shukla (IAS), Secretary of Tourism and Aviation for the Government of Gujarat, delivered a talk on ‘Investment Opportunities of Tourism in Gujarat.’ He began by saying, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj has been an inspiration for all of us.” He then spoke about the diverse tourist places available in Gujarat and the different policies of the Gujarat Government in helping to increase tourism in the state. He said, “According to the States Survey conducted by India Today, Gujarat consistently ranks in the top 3 states for tourism.” During his address, he also showed a short video on the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Gujarat.

Subsequently, Alok Kumar Pandey (IAS), Commissioner of Tourism and Managing Director of Tourism Corporation of Gujarat, spoke on ‘Tourism Growth & Key Opportunities in Gujarat.’ He began by expressing his pride in the fact that Bhagwan Swaminarayan hailed from Ayodhya, which is near his native place. He then delved into the different facets of Gujarat Tourism, such as its diversity, culture, heritage, state-of-the-art infrastructure, connectivity, sustainability, and world-class tourism capabilities. He also spoke about the history of important spiritual heritage places in Gujarat, such as Girnar, Dwarka, Bet-Dwarka, etc.

Manoj Joshi, a leading actor in Hindi and Gujarati cinema, shared his thoughts on Gujarat’s spiritual significance, noting that notable spiritual, corporate and political figures, including Bhagwan Krishna, Dhirubhai Ambani and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, all belong to Gujarat. He also highlighted how Gujaratis are known for their industriousness and politeness and how these qualities have led to their success in various fields. He went on to speak about how the state’s proximity to Mumbai makes it a popular destination for cinema shooting, providing employment opportunities to locals. He added that Gujarat is a haven of diverse tourist locations and due to government policies, it is becoming a cinema-friendly state.

In his keynote address, Mulu Bera, Honourable Tourism Minister of Gujarat, expressed his pride in the state’s status as a pioneer in tourism. He specifically cited the largest spiritual festival in the world ‘Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav’ as reaffirming this belief. He mentioned that under the leadership and guidance of the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Honourable Chief Minister of Gujarat Bhupendra Patel, new tourist attractions are being added to make Gujarat a more tourist-friendly state. He noted that many tourists visiting Gujarat from around the world to experience the various festivals and engage in different types of tourism such as wildlife, natural, historical and spiritual.

Ajay Prakash, President of the Travel Agents Federation of India, spoke on ‘Tourism and Global Peace.’ He said, “Tourism by creating jobs offers great opportunities for emerging economies and reduces inequality and poverty. It should strive to conserve the natural environment and cultural heritage and traditions. Travel and tourism are about engaging with humankind and nature. It is about making connections beyond boundaries. In today’s times, travellers are more aware and discerning. The younger generation is much more conscious of the ecological footprint of any activity. So, all businesses need to take heed of this new paradigm.” Overall, Ajay Prakash emphasized that tourism is about connecting people and cultures and that it has the potential to promote understanding and peace between nations.

Gyanvatsal Swami, a prominent spiritual motivational speaker from BAPS, delivered a thought-provoking speech on the economic and spiritual benefits of promoting religious tourism in India. He cited the existence of approximately 3.5 million temples in the country, providing direct employment to over 35 million people and indirect employment to others, such as flower sellers and local market vendors. He argued that promoting religious tourism not only benefits the economy, but also promotes spiritual values and reduces social pollution. Swami also highlighted the impact of spiritual leader Pramukh Swami Maharaj, who travelled to over 50 countries, initiated 1,000 sadhus and created a permanent volunteer force of 50,000 volunteers, and suggested that one can learn that faith coupled with hard work and ethics is the key to success by observing the life of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. He also noted that Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar is a place where one can experience enlightenment, excitement, elegance, and entertainment.

Words by Mita Vinay

Depression and anxiety are one of the natural emotions in human beings. Well, these emotions are not as bad as we perceive them to be. In my experience, I feel they are necessary emotions to experience for us humans. Having said this, I don’t mean we stay with the said emotions for long. Staying with these emotions can weaken the mind. Once the mind starts weakening coming back becomes tough. Let’s look at some natural techniques to come out of these dark emotions.

Change the place, change the energies: As I mentioned, depression and anxiety are emotions, they will amplify if one stays in the same space bouncing the same energies. However, one can see a great change in overcoming these emotions just by moving out of that space and energy. Try moving out from your usual environment for a few days and see the difference.

Adopt a new habit: This technique is extremely beneficial to come out of these emotions. Try adopting habits that can interest you, such as walking, learning a musical instrument, singing (why not), reading, painting, solving puzzles. There’s a lot of options to choose from. Now, the science behind how adopting a new habit can help in combating anxiety and depression. When we adopt a habit and invest our time in learning it, our frontal brain gets activated during the time we invest in learning. This gives enough time for the hindbrain to relax and rejuvenate. This helps in strengthening the mind and strengthens overall function in our headspace.

Yoga and Excercise: we are aware that yoga aligns with mind body and breath. Try and include heart opening Asanas. An intense yogasana practice followed by breathing exercise must show great results. Similarly, any form of exercise should be practiced.

Breathing and awareness: This is my mantra always to beat any imbalances in the body. Usually, anxiety and depression also disturb the breathing patterns and rhythms. Just being aware of the changes in this subtle yet one of the most important functions of our body can help us navigate back to a sound mental health.

Connect with nature: walk on a green patch of grass, walk on sand, crush dry leaves with your feet. Touch a tree, hug a tree. Gaze at a morning sky or passing clouds or stars and moon. watch the sunrise or sunset. Just connect your mind body and breath with nature. You will see nothing is stagnated, everything is moving and embracing new changes all the time. This is inspiring to make the changes within.

Chanting: Everything around and within us is a vibration. Chanting creates vibrations that help in altering the imbalances in our body. Chant and absorb the vibration and see the magic it brings within your body. The chanting activity should be continued for a good amount of time to see the subtle but almost permanent results it brings. Patience is the key here.

Salt Bath: Salt has many properties including removing the negative energies. In India and many countries. Salt is extensively used to wade off the imbalance energies. We, in India, have been following this technique of holding some salt in the fist and rotate it on our loved one’s head to ease out the Nazar. Similarly, a salt bath can help a person feel very light and relaxed. Take a spoon of rock salt or Himalayan pink salt, add it into the bucket of warm water and rinse your body with it. See the difference it makes in overall mood lift.

Pratishtha Rawat is a passionate health coach and wellness expert who strongly believes in far-reaching benefits of sustainable eating and living. She truly believes that food is medicine and that you are what you eat. Here is an interview with Pratishtha Rawat:

Q. Tell us a little about yourself, your professional journey, like how you get started into the health coaching profession, and what this journey has been like for you.

Transcending the domains of health coaching and nutrition, I envision myself as a lifestyle mentor. My credo guides me to help my communities identify the several, far-reaching benefits of sustainable eating and living. It all started when I decided to self-heal my hypothyroid. Overcoming this challenge, I developed a passion to leverage my experiences to assist others. Today, I can confidently state that this journey defines me.

Q. In your opinion, what is the most profound challenge?

I believe that all of us should strive to silence our inner critic, and that’s definitely been a challenge that I constantly grapple with as well.

Q. How can the domain of health and wellness be improved?

I feel that there is an urgent need to combat the problem of misinformation in the sphere of health and wellness; people simply don’t have sufficient access to accurate information! Being a health coach, I endeavour to fill this gap in awareness and help create informed communities.

Q. How did you get education/training for this?

In my line of work, it’s all about experiential learning! Currently, I am pursuing a health coach certification at IIN, New York.

Q. What does being a health coach mean to you?

A health coach is much more than just a nutrition expert. I perceive myself as someone who intends to spread information about sustainable transformation. Empowering the people around me to achieve their wellness goals defines my work. Mind, body and soul—a well-rounded approach towards nourishment.

Q. What do you enjoy the most in your profession?

What I relish the most is the growth mindset that I have developed over the years working as a wellness expert. I learn every day and from everyone, I interact with; others’ experiences help me broaden my horizons and delve deeper into the realm of wellness.

Q. How do you promote good health in society? What kind of health coaching do you impart?

Well, I translate scientific facts into feasible practices that help my clients master challenges in their on-going wellness journeys. I am always there for them as a guide and more importantly, as their empathetic friend.

Q. How do you see the role of a health coach in the post-COVID world?

Now more than ever, coaches need to hone their active listening skills! Clients need to be heard, and we need to be empathetic listeners.

Q. Any health tips would you like to share with our readers?

There is no ‘silver bullet’! One needs to understand that consistency is key to wellness. I truly believe that food is medicine, and you are what you eat; hence, it isn’t surprising that the world is beginning to understand the significance of clean whole foods! Moreover, it is key that one doesn’t perceive healthy living as inflicting pain on oneself; it shouldn’t be deemed as punishing oneself! Food must be relished and celebrated, it’s this attitude that I wish to instil in people.

Q. What advice would you give to someone who aims to become a health coach?

Only enter this trade if you are passionate about helping and empowering others. As a health coach, one needs to be a source of inspiration for their clients.

Q. What’s your favourite travel destination?

The awe-inspiring Grand Canyon has my heart! The Amangiri retreat made the experience even more special. Definitely check it out!

Q. What is your favourite indulgence/grub/nibbles?

The scrumptious Saag and Bajra Khichdi with a ton of desi ghee are my favourites!

Q. What do you like to do in your free time?

Nurturing my deep love for music, I like to explore the world of EDM in my downtime!

Q. What’s your all-time favourite books, and why?

‘Own the day, own your life’ by Aubrey Marcus is my absolute favourite. I like it because the author has simplified nuanced wellness concepts into knowledge that everyone can comprehend. ‘Tools of Titans’ by Tim Ferriss is my go-to source for limitless motivation!

—

With a mission to make healthy snacking options available and accessible to all Indian households, Seema Jindal Jajodia founded Nourish Organics in 2009. Her brand is committed to keeping good health at the centre of everything they do. As a result, they end up crafting products that are just as wholesome and nutritious as they are appetizing and delicious. A true brand ambassador, Seema is personally a health & fitness fanatic and unsurprisingly lists an invigorating trekking holiday as her ultimate escape.

Here, she shares her favourite trekking and climbing experiences and also tells us how to plan the perfect trekking trip.

Q1. I want to go for a trek. Where should I even start?

It is important to understand that trekking is an adventure and adventure means having fun in discomforting situations. Keeping this in mind, if trekking is something that is still on your radar then start reading about it or follow some bloggers and Instagram accounts for inspiration. Today, there is a wealth of information available online. For me personally, when I began trekking, I started hanging out with friends who were frequent trekkers. This was really helpful to get first-hand information. So if you can, find and join trekking groups around you. Also, if you get a chance, check out the interesting and informative talks about the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) holds regularly. As for trekking sites, the Himalayas are a great option and offer many different levels of treks.

Q2. Tell me about your trip planning philosophy?

I am in touch with two of the premier trekking groups in the country. They keep members posted about upcoming treks and climbs. According to my time availability and interests, I sign up well in advance for the ones I want to.

Q3. How do you decide where to climb?

When I get the upcoming trek information, I study it properly. I see if it is something I would like to do and can do. Initially, I only signed up for easy treks to get a sense of the experience. With each trekking expedition, my confidence increased and so did my strength and skills for climbing and trekking.

Q4. What does a good climb or trek experience feel like?

A good climb or trek experience depends completely on your own mindset. Any adventure will have a fair amount of challenges. If challenges excite you and seeing stunning views, breathing pure air, and feeling fit are on your to-do-list, then you will really enjoy the experience.

Q5. Who should I travel with?

My advice to you would be that you should always travel with a recommended group. Your life depends on the people who accompany you. There are many amateur agencies that offer these experiences, but we should be wary of them. Again, the IMF is a great body to recommend seasoned and safe companies. If you can, try and get to know all the people who are going on the trek with you beforehand. After all, you will be spending all your time with them during the trek.

Q6. Let’s get down to specifics. What are your top five trekking or climbing destinations?

I really enjoy talking about my favourite treks. I can go on about the incredible experiences I have had and there have been many but I will share my top five:

1. Kilimanjaro, Africa in 2018 with Aquaterra Adventures

2. Everest Base Camp, Nepal in 2019 with Juniper Travels

3. Patagonia, South America with Pygmy Elephants

4. Annapurna Base Camp, Nepal with Juniper in 2014

5. Buran Ghati Trek, Uttarakhand with my family organized by Juniper in 2018

I must warn you, if you are a beginner, the above treks will be a little tough. However, do keep them on your to-do list.

Q7. Okay, now that I am sold. What should I pack for my trekking trip?

Packing is one of the keys to a successful trip. It is important to plan and pack all your essentials including suitable clothes, a sleeping bag, rain gear etc. In the wilderness and the mountains, your own gear is what protects you from the harsh unpredictable climate. Your shoes are the most important investment. It’s not comfortable or safe to walk on rocks and slopes in your usual running shoes. Many first-timers make this mistake. You must research and buy the strongest and most comfortable shoes and do break them in well before you are set to leave. Different treks will require different gears. The company that plans your trip will hand out a complete packing list, which must be adhered to. It’s not feasible to share things with others on the trek.

As preparation for your trek, go on regular walks in your new shoes. Build up good strength and stamina so you can enjoy the scenery rather than complain of having aches and pains because of an unfit body.

In the post-COVID-19 era, it seems travel insurance is no longer optional. After millions of travellers were stranded abroad, lost deposits or entire non-refundable ticket amounts because of the outbreak, out of fear, travel insurance is now more or less mandatory. But what should be expected from travel insurance after the pandemic? In this interview, we have Dev Karvat tell us just that.

Words by Srishti Jindal

Q. The world is coming to terms with what COVID-19 means for business and for the travel sector particularly. Everyone is trying to figure out what the new normal is going to be. How long do you think it will take for travel to get back to 2019 levels and stabilize?

After almost five months of lockdown and constant efforts to keep the virus in check, the travel industry and other businesses are now gradually treading on their path to recovery. It is impossible to contain the pandemic completely until there is a vaccine in place and hence, services connected to the travel industry are levelling up their hygiene and safety standards, making provisions for contactless travel and doing everything in their capacity to adapt to the new normal. I think with the necessary precautions and measures, we should be able to stabilise by mid-2021.

Q. When you speak with your clients or when you talk to other CEOs, what are the risks that they are raising with you? What are they most concerned about today?

As per the conversations we’ve had with our clients and industry leaders so far, what concerns them the most is the safety of their customers while travelling. We have been receiving requests to customize our protection plans to cover pandemics such as Covid-19. In addition, our assistance services have gained greater traction among our clients, especially our evacuation support and local hospitalization support. Given the interest and inputs, we are closely working with our underwriters and assistance partners to design a highly flexible and customized set of products for our clients.

Q. According to you, how should the industry adapt itself and plan its recovery?

According to me, resilience, awareness and innovation are the keys to recovery for the Indian travel and tourism sector. Covid-19 is here to stay and we may have to learn to live with the virus for some time. Hence, our primary focus should be to regain the confidence of travellers and come together to benchmark safety and hygiene standards to ensure their safety. Plus, it goes without saying that technology made our lives a lot simpler during the lockdown. I feel it is high time we think out of the box and use technology and move towards automation to bring down operational costs. Further, with International travel still remaining restricted more opportunities for domestic tourism have opened up. So, improving our domestic tourism offerings will also assist us in recovering faster.

Q. How is TrawellTag preparing itself for the ‘new normal’? What is your strategy for the year?

We continue to work alongside our underwriters to explore the possibilities of designing products that will be relevant in a post-COVID world. We have sharpened our focus towards travel assistance services that will be relevant for travellers during such distressful situations. We plan to bring to the trade, niche travel assistance products combined with smarter technology. The idea is to enable the industry, as a whole, to instil faith and confidence back in travel and emerge stronger together.

Q. In the post COVID world, what should a traveller expect from travel insurance policies?

Travelling always came along with contingencies; however, COVID-19 has completely transformed the way people look at travelling. Correspondingly, services will also undergo changes as customers have now realised the importance of travel protection and are looking for holistic products that provide real-time assistance services such as local hospitalization and medical evacuation at the time of need.

In the post COVID world, we will see protection plans that will cover the impacts of a future pandemic. Coverage extension, cancellations and medical benefits will be a big priority for travel protection service providers going forward.

Q. Have you unveiled any new or redesigned insurance policies so far?

As domestic tourism has gradually started, we have developed benefits for new-age travel trends such as staycations and domestic cruise trips. We are also covering cancellations and delays for domestic business trips. We are providing services such as medical evacuation and local hospitalization support coupled with relevant travel insurance benefits during the hour of need and constantly striving to enhance our services.

Q. Do you think revamping travel insurance can boost people’s confidence to travel?

Travellers today need reassurance that even if their trips don’t go as planned, there is someone by their side to protect and assist them. I genuinely feel that educating travellers and improving their awareness about travel protection, given the highly unpredictable nature of travel, will immensely boost their confidence to travel.

Q. Finally, as a business owner in the travel sector, what are three tips you would give to other business owners. How can they cope up with the on-going crisis?

Times are tough and hence we should stay strong and showcase resilience in the face of adversities. Being the custodians of the Indian travel industry, let us play our part by spreading awareness about the situation, educate our stakeholders about the precautions to be undertaken and help them during this crisis.

Acknowledging the Indian love for a good cup of tea, Taiwan Tourism Bureau has included a series of tea-centred celebrations and holidays as part of the ‘Holiday for Healing’. These holidays are part of a larger outlook by Taiwan to promote organic tea and work on international standardisation of quality. As Taiwan begins a phase of gradual opening up, beginning with business-based travel from low and medium-risk countries, opening up to tourism in a phased manner is to follow. The inclusion of a series of celebrations centred around Tea promises to cherish all things organic amidst nature, in an effort to encourage experiences that please the senses and make way for new memories, to create a true healing environment.

Taiwan’s Tea Context

With 2020 marked as the year of organic tea, authorities in Taiwan are developing a system of grading of tea based on an internationally agreed-upon system. Talks are on in the Asia-Pacific region and the US currently, and as the situation improves, with key individuals in this sector in South Asia as well. Currently, Taiwan accounts for 20% of the global production of the Oolongs variety, with harvest concentrated between April and December. Interestingly, Bubble Tea, which is such a global phenomenon currently, also originated in Taiwan in the last decade of the previous millennium. Currently, there are about 20,000 hectares of tea farms in Taiwan, producing approximately 20,000 tons of tea annually. And in the last two quarters of 2020, Taiwan invites international tourists to stop and take a sip in the journey of Healing.

Taipei Nangang Expo

From November 13-16, the Taipei Nangang Expo will also be held which celebrates the beverage along with arts and culture of Taiwan, giving tourists the opportunity to taste the best in Taiwanese organic tea from across the country. The Expo is part of a larger Taiwan Food and Beverage series which hosted over 2800 booths and exhibitors with 200,000+ buyers in the previous edition held last year. Both a B2B and B2C event, tourists and curious visitors can expect plenty of shopping and exquisite tea tasting as part of the multi-day experience.

Alishan Four Seasons Tea Tour: A Holiday for Healing

If cherry blossoms and magical sunsets were not reason enough to tempt traveller to take a trip down to the Alishan National Scenic Area, then the scent of tea leaves and the promise of a warm, home-brewed cup only add to the charm of the Alishan region in south-west Taiwan. The Alishan Four Seasons Tea Tour, initially scheduled as a round-the-year celebration, will now be hosting an Autumn Tea Party in August amidst the myriad of autumn hues, followed by one in late-winter. Registration to tea tours are currently open for locals on pre-booking, but the situation continues to evolve as per opening up.

Alpine oolong tea, Jinxuan tea, green tea and standard breakfast teas produced by Alishan are quite popular for their freshness and mellow flavour.

Day-long Tea tours begin with a magical sunrise over the Alishan Scenic Area, while sipping a cup of fresh, organic tea picked from the plantations around. Alishan is famous for its sunrise views, best explored from the Jade Mountains for active trekkers, and the Zushan Sunrise Observation Deck. With gentle climbs, a relaxed pace and tea tasting, the morning passes by amidst an assortment of beautiful sights, smells and knowledge sessions. Included in the morning visit to the plantations are sessions on the art of gathering and brewing along with overall eco-tourism, related industries and products. Afternoons will be kept aside for a lunch of local delights amidst fresh mountain air, with gentle walking trails afterwards to walk it all off, while keeping only the memories and sights. Sipping a warm cup of fine tea in autumn or winter whilst soaking in the natural scenery of Alishan with sights such as cherry blossoms, fireflies, waterfalls, bamboo forests, birds and enchanting clouds fosters a sense of ‘Gemütlichkeit’ – the German way of expressing a sense of cosiness with your surroundings.

So, let’s start planning because hope lies at the end of this dark phase, and Taiwan is keenly waiting for you.

Iconic luxury Thai resort Pimalai Resort & Spa is a serene sanctuary where guests can feel completely at peace in their private surroundings. Harmless animals and plants have also found their haven there.

Pimalai is located on the laid-back southern tip of Koh Lanta, Krabi and nestled in 100 acres of a tropical jungle. The beach is long and private and there are many open-air dining options. The resort’s award-winning luxury spa is secluded and also a destination on its own.

The sense of privacy is totally guaranteed with suites and villas that are spread throughout the estate. The fauna and flora – and local animal life – have been loving the lockdown and have made Pimalai their home as nature rebounds. Dedicated measures are being taken by the sustainable resort to protect the natural habitat for all animals. Pimalai Resort & Spa is set to re-open in July.
