Eurowings takes off for Havana, Cuba
Eurowings has begun flying to a new destination, the Cuban capital of Havana. An Airbus A330 of the quality low-cost carrier from the Lufthansa Group took off earlier on its inaugural flight from Cologne/Bonn to the Caribbean metropolis.
Along with Varadero, the airline’s first long-haul destination to which there have been flights three times a week since November 2015, Havana is Eurowings’s second travel destination on Cuba. Havana will be offered once a week on Thursdays. This now makes the Cuban metropolis Eurowings’ eleventh long-haul destination.
There are regular flights to seven other destinations in the current winter flight schedule: Mauritius, Phuket, Bangkok, Miami, Varadero, Puerto Plata and Punta Cana. Next summer, Eurowings long-haul flights will touch down in Mauritius, Bangkok, Seattle, Las Vegas, Orlando, Miami, Varadero, Puerto Plata, Havanna and Punta Cana.
Havana, with over two million inhabitants, is the largest city in the Caribbean and is located on the Bay of Havana between the Atlantic Ocean and the Straits of Florida. Old Havana, originally founded by the Spanish, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982.
Since then, the city’s historic centre has been completely renovated and will be refinanced by tourism. The number of foreign visitors has been growing rapidly since the 1990s with tourism currently being one of the city’s most important economic sectors.
