Air India plans Washington DC flight in 2016

Viability study for new route to be undertaken in the coming months, “senior official” reveals

Air India’s new route from Delhi to Washington DC is expected to launch before the end of 2016.

The Economic Times reported a “top Air India official” as saying that a viability study will be undertaken in the coming months, with a view to commencing flights towards the end of next year.

“If everything goes fine, we may start a direct flight to Washington by the end of 2016,” the anonymous official was quoted saying.
Late last month, India’s Civil Aviation Minister, Ashok Gajapathi Raju, revealed that the national carrier is planning to launch the first non-stop connection between the capital cities of India and the US.

Air India launched three weekly flights between Delhi and San Francisco in December 2015, expanding its US network to four destinations: New York JFK, Newark, Chicago and San Francisco.

And the national carrier’s international expansion will continue this week with the start of flights between Ahmedabad and London, which get underway on Tuesday.
