Indian Railways now allows you transfer your train ticket to someone else

The Indian Railways will now allow passengers holding confirmed reservation tickets to transfer the ticket onto another person’s name.
“Chief Reservation Supervisor of important stations are authorized by Railway Administration to permit the change of name of a passenger having a seat or berth reserved in his name,” a notice by Indian railways passenger reservation enquiry said. Although the terms and conditions in the reservation inquiry state that customers cannot transfer a berth or seat reserved in the name of the respective person; some modifications to the rules have been announced.
The request for change in the name of the ticket holding passengers would be granted only once, the railways said. Government servants would be allowed to transfer tickets to others, provided a written application is handed in. “Where the passenger is a Government Servant, proceeding on duty and appropriate authority, makes a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure of trains,” the railways said.

A second exception to the rule would be when the passenger changes the reservation to another member of his or her family. “Where the passenger makes a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the train that the reservation made in his name may be transferred to another member of his family, meaning, Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Son, Daughter, Husband and Wife,” the notice added.

Students would also be allowed to change the reservation made on the ticket to another student of the same educational institute. “Where the passengers are students of a recognized educational institution and the Head of the institution makes a request in writing 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, that the reservation made in the name of any student be transferred to any other student of the same institute,” the railways added.

A fourth exception would be when passengers were traveling on account of a marriage event. “Where the passengers are members of a marriage party and any person deemed to be Head of such party makes a request in writing 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train that the reservation made in the name of any member of the marriage party be transferred to any other person,” the notice said.

Lastly the railways would allow change in the name of the ticket holding passengers on account of National Cadet Corps who makes such a request. “Where the passengers are a group of cadets of National Cadet Corps and any officer who is the head of the group, makes a request in writing at least 24 hours before the departure of the train that the reservation made in the name of any cadet be transferred to any other cadet,” the notice added.
The railways would provide a change in the name of tickets at the request of students, marriage party group or the National Cadet Corps only if the tickets do not exceed 10% of the total group strength.
