Dreamy treats at JW Kitchen @JW Marriott Kolkata

Here’s a luxury, fine-dining restaurant that is incidentally the only one-of-a-kind not only in Kolkata but also in the eastern region of India and is a dream of every gourmet. We’re talking about JW Kitchen@JW Marriott Kolkata that is opened all round-the-clock. The restaurant is on the ground floor of the five-star haunt at JBS Haldane Avenue, and came up on November 3, last year.

The interiors of the restaurant boast of long columns of bells made of fibre and coated with zinc. For connoisseurs of good food heading to the restaurant, there is Continental, Asian and Indian cuisines. The restaurant serves a bewildering variety of delicately-spiced dishes and fragrantly spiced curries. One should try Father Michel’s Burata – an Italian signature dish in the appetizer and salad section that comes for Rs 425 exclusive of taxes. For non-vegetarians, the main course begins with black pepper crusted Salmon pegged at Rs 850. For more substantial meal, dig into Murg Bhatti or Chingri (prawn) curry, an eternal favourite of Bengal. One can also go for an a la carte menu at the restaurant.

According to Alok Anand, Executive Chef, JW Marriott Kolkata, “In the current age, an increasing number of food lovers are getting into health food, thus making salads popular. We have four live stations including our chaat, waffle, Italian and an Asian counter that make us stand out from other fine dining restaurants in Kolkata. There is Do-It-Yourself (DIY) option in the salad counter and at least 12 kinds of salads are on display.” The Asian counter has on offer Chinese and Burmese dishes.

There are six kinds of chaat on offer. I began with the lip-smacking Aloo ka tikka chaat and moved on to Kasundi Paneer Tikka- paneer cubes tossed in spices and pepped up with spicy mustard sauce known as Kasundi in Bengal. I also tried the gravy items like Kadhai Parwal – parwal stuffed with spices and the spicy Dum Aloo that are eternal favourite among vegans. For die-hard non-vegetarians, there is Chingri Curry, another signature creation of Bengal that has prawns fried in spices and dipped in coconut milk.

To round off the meal, I proceeded towards the dessert section and was taken aback by the amazing variety of 25 kinds of desserts including Continental and Indian delights. I sampled a few of the Continental delights like hazelnut Praline, brownie, Chocolate truffle, baked yogurt, mud cake, baked chocolate tart, chocolate salted caramel et al. Baring baked yogurt, all are melt-in-mouth chocolate delicacies and were divine to taste but were heavy-on-the-stomach. If you still want to pamper your sweet tooth with Indian desserts, there are Besan Ke Ladoo, Gulab Jamun, Phirni and the traditional Bengali sweets like Sandesh and Chamcham. One should not miss out on ice creams.

All those who are interested to indulge their taste buds can shell out Rs 1,250 per person and relish the culinary extravaganza offered at the buffet lunch of the restaurant.

Verdict: This is undoubtedly the destination for discerning food lovers where there are a lot of options for Asian food from South- East Asia and Far East. Gourmet lovers can customise and make their own salads. The dessert section abounds in plenty. For well-travelled guests, this is the place to head for eclectic and delectable dishes, impeccable service on offer and a plethora of food choices. Gourmets also get to learn a lot about the way of preparing their favourite dishes in the live counters. So what are you waiting for? If you prefer to indulge your taste buds at a five-star dining during the festive times, look no further beyond and just go ahead.
