Jet Airways brings back B777s to boost capacity
Jet Airways is planning to take back six twin-aisle aircraft over the next six months and use them to expand its capacity on existing routes.
The Boeing 777s are currently being operated by Jet’s partner airline, Etihad.
The Economic Times reported the Indian carrier’s chief financial officer, Amit Agarwal, as saying; “Our wide-body aircraft currently on lease to partner airline Etihad will be taken back and operationalised from August. Based on the market condition, our plan is to upgrade some of the existing A330 routes with B777.
“We will be careful and cautiously deploy these aircraft in the domestic market,” he added.
The long-haul aircraft had been wet-leased to Etihad, which holds 24% stake in Jet Airways. And Argawal said the B777s will now be used to add more capacity to its both within India and to destinations in the Arabian Gulf.
The newspaper added however, that Jet also plans to deploy the aircraft on long-haul routes to destinations including Amsterdam, Paris and Toronto.
Mumbai-based Jet currently operates a total of 116 aircraft, 22 of which are twin-aisle jets.
