Vietnam Airlines ranked among top 10 most punctual airlines in Asia-Pacific in 2024

Cirium, a leading aviation analytics firm, unveils the top 10 most punctual airlines in the Asia-Pacific region in its 2024 On-Time Performance Review with Vietnam Airlines taking up the 6th place. The airline achieved a OTP rate of 76.7%, moving up three spots from 2023.

The flag carrier continued to showcase its operational reliability on the world stage, alongside other leading airlines such as Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways and Singapore Airlines.

Certain challenges persist in 2024 include ongoing global engine issues, supply chain disruptions, labor shortages and adverse weather. Despite these challenges, airlines and airports worldwide have made serious efforts to ensure safe, efficient and on-time operations.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), Vietnam Airlines scored a OTP rate of approximately 82% in 2024, far surpassing the national average of 73.7%.

Dang Anh Tuan, Executive Vice President of Vietnam Airlines, said: “Consistently maintaining strong on-time operations and ranking among the most punctual airlines in the Asia-Pacific region not only demonstrates Vietnam Airlines’ commitment to operational excellence and customer satisfaction but also reaffirms our position in the global stage. Our priority is to provide the best travel experience while leveraging our reliability and reputation in an increasingly competitive industry.”

To improve on-time performance in 2024, Vietnam Airlines implemented several measures, including rapidly expanding its fleet to enhance operational capacity, optimising aircraft maintenance checks, and adjusting flight schedules to improve overall efficiency, particularly in the afternoon and evening time slots.

Furthermore, Vietnam Airlines developed detailed contingency plans to respond to adverse weather. The airline proactively adjusted flight schedules at affected airports by unpredictable weather conditions to minimize delays and diversions. Passengers are regularly updated via email, SMS, phone calls, website, and social media.

Looking forward, Vietnam Airlines will continue to enhance its performance by incorporating technologies to improve on-time performance and deliver an exceptional passenger experience. These efforts aim to reinforce Vietnam’s position as a growing force in the global aviation industry.

Cirium’s Ranking Methodology

Cirium’s ranking is based on On-Time Arrival Performance (OTAP), which is when a passenger flight  arrives at the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time.

The result is also based on an extensive amount of data collected and curated from more than 600 global sources of real-time flight information including published schedules, government agencies, civil aviation authorities, airlines, airports, and major airline reservation systems.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) generally uses On-Time Departure Performance (OTDP) for statistics, which differs from Cirium’s focus on arrival performance.
