Culture:

From a Broadway performance in Midtown, Manhattan, to a panorama of the City at the Queens Museum, there are plenty of attractions, performing arts and culture to experience during a Valentine’s Day outing:

Couples can celebrate Valentine’s Day aboard the sophisticated and elegant Bateaux New York or lively and energetic Spirit of New York. Departing year-round from Chelsea Piers, the dining and sightseeing cruises float along the Hudson past New York’s iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge. Accompanied by buffet-style or plated three-course creative cuisine and live entertainment, couples are greeted with a complimentary champagne toast and roses.

Head over to the Bronx Zoo for their Name-a-Roach program – a light-hearted way to make sure your loved one knows your feelings will last a lifetime. Since 2011, thousands of hopeless romantics from around the world have named real live Madagascar hissing cockroaches after loved ones, or not-so-loved ones. During Valentine’s Week, get caught up in iconic love stories at the Metropolitan Opera in Manhattan with performances of Carmen (February 15th) and the season premiere of Werther (February 16th).

On February 11 and 12, stroll through the expansive Enid A. Haupt Conservatory at the New York Botanical Garden and talk to guides on hand about the aphrodisiac plants found at the Garden. There will also be expert-led chocolate discussions and tastings as well as a pop-up bar in the warmth of the Conservatory.

See all of NYC at once by visiting the Queens Museum and their Panorama of the City of New York, a scale model of the five boroughs that depicts every building built before 1992 (with a few modifications since). Conceived by Robert Moses and created for the 1964 World’s Fair, the display is the largest architectural model in the world, with 895,000 tiny buildings. You can even buy your Valentine their own NYC “real estate” with the Museum’s Adopt-a-Building program. For as little as $50, buildings on the panorama can be “purchased” with property owners receiving a deed for their donation.

On Valentine’s evening, experience an unforgettable view of the night sky and hear some stellar romance stories from the ancient past at the Romance under the Stars soiree at the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium.

Get lost in the dance with the sweeping luxurious celebration of romance and fantasy that is New York City Ballet’s rendition of The Sleeping Beauty at the David H. Koch Theater from February 8-19. Or go more modern with the return of the Martha Graham Dance Company to the Joyce Theater from February 14– 26. Try and outrun Cupid’s arrow on a Valentine’s Day 5k on the shorelines of Staten Island’s scenic Conference House Park. Taking place February 11, enjoy running the 265-acre park at the southernmost point of the borough– and the state of New York itself.

It’s all puppy love with The Westminster Dog Show on February 13 & 14. Spectators can watch this long-running competition, with several categories in agility training including Best in Breed that takes place at Piers 92/94 (711 12th Ave. at 55th St. & West Side Highway) and Madison Square Garden (West 33rd St. & 7th Ave.).
