India secures funds for longest bridge
The Indian government has secured a loan with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to fund the construction of the country’s longest bridge.
Spanning the River Ganges in the northeastern state of Bihar, the new 9.8km road bridge will be located near the city of Patna. It will span both channels of the Ganges and serve as an alternate route to the existing Ganga Bridge, which is said to be “deteriorating”.
The ADB said the bridge will “provide vital transport links between the northern and southern parts of the state and with neighbouring Nepal”.
The ADB’s loan of US$500 million comes in addition to the INR1.77 billion (US$26m) already spent by India on pre-construction activities. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
