‘Make in India’ high speed train coaches will be manufactured at two-thirds of the cost of a regular train coach
Ministry of Railways just revealed that India will soon get self-propelled trains sets, which can travel at the speed of 160 kmph. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has taken up a project, wherein it will manufacture state of the art self-propelled train sets.
The ICF General Manager, S Mani, made an announcement while hoisting the tricolour on the occasion of Republic Day. He said that the train sets will be called Train-18 and will have 3-phase propulsion.
All the coaches in the train will be interconnected with fully sealed gangways.
“The train sets will be manufactured at two-thirds of the cost of the same trains manufactured in the international market, “ he added.
So far, the factory has already produced Linke Hoffman Busch (LHB) coaches which can run up to 160-200 kmph and also has expertise in making self-propelled trains like EMUs.
According to a senior official, the ministry has asked the factory to take up the project after it is in the process of making high-speed LHB premium coaches called Tejas, luxury Anubhuti coaches, and Antyodaya coaches.
Currently, India’s fastest train is Gatimaan Express with a top speed of 160 km per hour. However, there is also the Spanish-made Talgo (still on trial), that clocks a speed of 180 km/hr by covering 84 km in 38 minutes.
Recently, the Indian Railways was making headlines for having a plan to collaborate with the Russian Railways to increase the speed of our passenger trains up to 200 km per hour.
