Vienna House Andel’s Berlin again awarded Green Globe certification

The 4-star superior hotel in Berlin was re-certified with the globally recognised Green Globe certification. In 349 criteria with emphasis on sustainable management, social and economic, cultural heritage and environment, the hotel was examined in a multi-day audit. Vienna House Andel’s Berlin, one of the most modern conference and event hotels, has been setting standards in terms of social and environmental commitment since 2011. In this year’s audit, the hotel fulfilled 87% of the standard criteria. The design hotel, a member of Austria’s largest hotel group Vienna House, scored particularly well in terms of its use of local suppliers, employee protection, waste management and resource conservation with regard to its water, energy and electricity use.

Ioana Nan, an accredited Green Globe auditor, describes the hotel’s performance as follows: “For me as auditor, it is a pleasure to see the hotel’s constant commitment to a clean environment. Despite new indicators within the Green Globe audits, Vienna House Andel’s Berlin passed its re-certification audit with style. The roof turfing of the hotel not only helps reduce energy costs, but has also managed to attract a new kind of guest – the adopted bee populations have turned the rooftop into a real habitat. The hotel constantly surprises with new and successful ideas.” Nan continues: “The regular qualification and training of the staff results in a higher level of motivation and lower employee turnover, and that doesn’t go unnoticed by the guests. Personally, I find it beautiful to see that children receive the same kind of caring and professional treatment as adults: a special buffet with all sorts of delicacies is prepared every morning just for the little guests.”

The Green Globe programme was established in 1993. It is the first global initiative dedicated to the certification and service improvement in the field of sustainability for the travel and tourism industry.

Doing business sustainably:

The hotel uses only 100% green electricity in its conference area, lobby, restaurants and bar. During the renovation and redesign of the public areas in the summer of 2016, Vienna House Andel’s Berlin shifted completely to LED lamps.  Green meetings are possible thanks to the conservation of resources in terms of technology and equipment. The green solutions include notepads made from recycled materials, paper-less telephone conference tools, as well as air conditioning and heating on demand depending on the number of participants or duration of the event. Upon request, the kitchen brigade will arrange for an organic catering service with seasonal products from local suppliers.

Guests of Vienna House Andel’s Berlin can do their part to protect the environment: with a special door hanger, guests can indicate their wish to save natural resources by foregoing the daily room cleaning. Thanks to the digital mobile concierge, guests receive valuable tips about Vienna House and the city. Even arrival and departure are environmentally friendly. The hotel’s convenient location near a variety of public transport options gives hotel guests and employees the possibility for carbon-neutral mobility. Guests arriving by electric car can charge their vehicle for free with green electricity at the charging stations in the hotel’s underground car park.
