Aadhaar and other government IDs compulsory to book domestic flights soon
In order to counter misbehaviour on domestic flights, the government of India is set to issue the final set of rules for the no fly list (NFL) on Friday. One interesting aspect of these rules is that after the implementation, you won’t be able to book domestic flights without using a government ID, according to a report by Times of India. So, from now on you will have to give the number of any one of these IDs for booking a domestic flight: Aadhaar, driving license, passport or PAN number. The voter ID card issued by the Election Commission might also be accepted but the final call over it is yet to be taken.
“India is pioneering in having a no fly list on the basis of safety as other countries have it on security grounds. A DGCA team (led by chief BS Bhullar) recently had discussions with global regulators at a meet in Mongolia. We had received comments on the draft NFL and after much deliberations, the final rules will be issued on Friday,” Union minister of state for aviation Jayant Sinha was quoted saying in the report. To book an international flight, you need to give the passport number anyway.
The concept of a no fly list came from the US. The motive of this type of list is to check on people who are prohibited from boarding commercial aircraft for travel within, into, or out of the country. The list bans people with criminal records along with those passengers who show unruly behaviour on the flight. In India, the national carrier Air India was the first to put Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad on the ‘no fly list’.
