Frankfurt is the ideal destination for a sustainable stay and green mobility
Are you a fan of eco-travel and like to get around town on your own steam? Is climate-friendly accommodation is something you like to choose over lavish hotels? Then you’ve come to the right place! Frankfurt is the ideal destination for a sustainable stay.
The Frankfurt Main Train Station ranks amongst Germany’s busiest railway stations, with regular rail services bringing travellers from Stuttgart (1 hr 18 min), Munich (3 hrs 15 min), Hamburg (3 hrs 37 min) or Berlin (4 hrs 12 min) to the metropolis on the River Main both quickly and easily. As per official information in December, Deutsche Bahn (DB) will be making their most comprehensive timetable changes (in recent years). ICE (Inter-City Express) trains from Berlin, for example, will be coming in Frankfurt every thirty minutes. Better yet, more international high-speed trains than ever before will be linking Frankfurt with the rest of Europe once these changes go into effect. By the end of the year, the EuroCity line will be connecting the finance centres of Frankfurt and Milan directly, with no change of train necessary. Countless other direct-service trains will be arriving in Frankfurt from Amsterdam, Budapest, Brussels, Chur, Moscow, Marseille, Paris, Vienna, Warsaw and Zurich.
Travellers who prefer to travel by coach will be equally pleased with Frankfurt’s ease of accessibility. The city’s central bus terminal, located on the south side of Frankfurt Station is one of the most used in all of the country. DeinBus FlixBus and Eurolines are just three of the many national and international coach operators servicing over 40 major European cities.
After arriving in Frankfurt, eco-friendly visitors have countless cycle rickshaws, known as “velotaxis”. These velotaxis are available to for getting to their final destination or just having a look around town. These velotaxis can be used to cover a specific route, with the fare depending on the distance travelled. Alternatively, passengers also have the option of using velotaxis to go on a cycling tour of the city, with the fare being calculated according to time. Guests may, for example, book a one-hour “Green City Tour” through the Frankfurt Tourist+Congress Board and thereby, become better acquainted with Frankfurt in a highly authentic and very eco-friendly manner. More active city visitors are urged to rent a bicycle and head off on their own tour of discovery. With Call-a-Bike, the bicycle hire service of Deutsche Bahn, or nextbike, another local cycle-hire company, visitors have the opportunity to swing into the saddle at all hours of the day and explore the many beautiful sides of Frankfurt, stopping wherever and whenever they wish to have a closer look, without having to worry about parking and the like.
Another method of eco-friendly move around is made possible with the so-called ‘Frankfurt Card’. This super-saver ticket provides holders with free and unlimited use of Frankfurt’s public transport system (train, tram, subway and bus) while also offering them discounts at various restaurants and retailers across town. With the convenient Frankfurt Card, visitors of Frankfurt now have at their disposal an easy and reasonable way to explore the metropolis on the River Main and its various attractions.
Finally, if you are looking for a special place to rest and relax after a day in the great outdoors, Hotel Villa Orange is highly recommended, which is Frankfurt’s first and only organic hotel. Villa Orange is a privately run boutique hotel with a cozy library and a richly adorned foyer. Here, guests start their day with an organic breakfast of the highest quality and end it in an old-fashioned yet ultra-comfortable canopy bed. So, when are you planning your visit?
